Philip Kerr was born April 9, 1940, in New York City. He attended secondary school at Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut, graduating in 1959. He then attended Harvard College, where he was a member of the Harvard Dramatic Club and won awards such as the McCord Prize for Artistic Achievement and the Leveritt House Art Prize. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
